Crowned winners at the CUBO Awards 2024

There was a whirlwind of celebrations in Belfast last Friday as our team took home the Creativity in Conferencing, Events, and Hospitality Award for hosting the hugely successful ISBA World Games 2023.

The CUBO (College & University Business Officers) are the campus services’ ‘Oscars’ and this is the second time in two years we’ve won the award, building on our excellent reputation for hosting major international events.

We welcomed more than 2,000 visually impaired competitors and officials to last summer’s Games, which saw campus transformed into an athletes’ village and tournament ground. Our team worked hard to make campus accessible with tactile signage, online guides, and provided visual awareness training to more than 400 staff. In the build-up to the Games, our Events Management team also helped organise, plan and delivered a two-day eye health conference in conjunction with IBSA showcasing groundbreaking academic research.

The judges chose our application over Queen’s University Belfast’s celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, and University of Leicester’s new botanical gardens outdoor events programme.

“It was a surprise to say the least as we were going up against some fantastic initiatives. But with the hours that our team and teams across wider Campus Services’ put into the Games, I’m also not surprised that we took won this incredible achievement. Our team’s efforts not only delivered an outstanding event but also has left a lasting legacy for University of Birmingham.”
