On Thursday 19 March, The Exchange welcomed over 130 event organisers, including both internal University of Birmingham staff and external members too, for an exclusive first look at Helios, the spectacular installation by British artist Luke Jerram that will transform The Exchange venue from March to November 2026.
During the evening, our historic Banking Hall was reimagined beneath the Sun. Now, we’re excited to share the moments that made it an unforgettable night…
A night beneath the Sun
Guests were some of the first to experience how Helios will elevate receptions, dinners and celebrations this year.
As the orange Sun illuminated the Banking Hall, the entire space shifted from day to dusk to night, showcasing the many moods and possibilities of Helios‑themed events.
Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed guided tours of The Exchange delivered by our Conference and Events team, live entertainment, bowl food, canapes and drinks that the Food Fellows chefs specially created for all Helios events, and tastings with Halfpenny Green Wine and Birmingham Brewing Company.
Here’s what some of our guests had to say:
‘What a great event. A very big thank you to Damien for the tour, I really enjoyed learning about the history of the building and all the unique features.’
‘It was a brilliant evening of networking and an amazing opportunity to show just how striking the Banking Hall looks with the illuminated sculpture created by artist, Luke Jerram.’
