Our greenest graduations yet

Our greenest graduations yet

From the LED lighting to the decorations, the winter graduation receptions were our greenest yet. The celebrations were a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate that great events shouldn’t harm the planet, and how Conferences and Events is supporting the University’s ambition to become operationally net zero carbon by 2045.

Coordinated and led by Conferences and Events Project Manager Annaliese Stanton, the winter graduation receptions took place in Aroma, a vibrant community space transformed for this special occasion. Every aspect – from festive decorations to lighting – was carefully considered to be as sustainable as possible.

“We’re proud to have made this year's graduation receptions as sustainable as possible. We’re always looking for ways to make our events greener, so it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to put these practices into action for graduations. This accomplishment reflects the effort our team has invested in supporting the University’s goal of achieving net zero carbon operations by 2045, ensuring our events have a positive impact on the environment."

What have we done to make it greener?

  • Recyclable cups, napkins, and table clothes

All our cups, napkins and tablecloths used throughout the graduation receptions were made from 100% recyclable materials, ensuring they could be recycled easily after the event. Recycling bins were conveniently placed throughout the venue, making it easy for guests to dispose of their waste responsibly.

  • LED lighting

Our lighting helped create a little festive magic without harming the planet, because all of our green and red lighting was low-energy LED. This not only enhanced the atmosphere but also reduced energy consumption.

  • Food waste

Any leftovers were sent to anaerobic bins, to be broken down and converted into energy.

  • Christmas tree

Our Christmas tree was sustainably sourced and decorated with eco-friendly ornaments. At the end of the festive season, it will be repurposed into chipped wood for compost.

  • FSC signage

All banners and signage around the venue were made from FSC-certified materials and completely PVC free. Table signs explained our sustainable practices; promoting transparency and raising awareness about our environmental efforts

By making these conscious choices, we’re not only creating memorable experiences but also contributing to a bright, greener future for all.
