We hosted the hockey and squash competitions during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The facilities that were used for the elite athletes included our hockey pitches, numerous sports halls, studios, 50-metre swimming pool, squash courts and dojo.
At the University of Birmingham, our state-of-the-art sports facilities will help you hit the ground running. Whether you’re hosting a competition, conference or an event with a sporting theme, our modern Sports & Fitness centre offers unrivalled versatility for all sorts of sports activities.
The 2,000m2 Munrow Arena can be divided into two or three smaller spaces if needed, or it can host one show court in the centre of the venue. The overall capacity is 1,000, made up of 791 bleacher seats and a viewing balcony.
There is also the Slater Hall, a versatile venue made up of several multipurpose spaces, including a sports hall and five studio spaces, with a capacity of 250. Not only is the hall a first-class venue for all kinds of sports, but it can be converted into an exhibition, classroom, or breakout space, perfect for sports conferences, training, and more.
The centre has a gym too, boasting 200 stations across two floors, plus a 50-metre swimming pool with seating for 200 spectators, and two accessible changing rooms. There are six international standard squash courts, including two courts with moveable walls for doubles matches, and spectator seating for up to 200. And, if this wasn’t impressive enough, towering above reception is a 10-metre climbing wall, with 30+ routes from 3-6c.
What’s more, Sport & Fitness has two meeting rooms that can have three configurations: a small meeting room for meetings up to 20; a larger room for 40; and a combined space offering seating for 60 theatre-style. Another larger meeting space, the Owsley Room, is located at Bournbrook Pavilion. This is near to the outdoor sports pavilion and pitches and is a great space for stand-alone or larger sized events. The Owsley Room can seat up to 90 guests.
As the official venue for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games’ hockey and squash competitions and training venue for swimming and athletics, we know a thing or two about bringing even the biggest sports events to life. Thanks to our extensive outdoor sports facilities, we’re well equipped to help sports amateurs and stars alike fulfil their potential and go for gold.
Just opposite the entrance of Sport & Fitness, you’ll find two 3G synthetic pitches designed for contact sport training; ten floodlit tennis and netball courts; and a wide range of grass pitches, which are suitable for most outdoor sports.
Our site also boasts two international standard water synthetic hockey pitches, where the Commonwealth’s best teams battled it out, and a national competition-standard athletics track. This comprises a 400m, eight-lane floodlit track with a full range of throws and jumps.
Looking for team building with a twist? You can also book the Raymond Priestley Centre, our outdoor education and activities centre in Coniston, the Lake District. Perfect for residentials trips and away days, the centre offers everything from canoeing and mountain walking to problem-solving tasks.
