We are excited to be hosting the hockey and squash competitions during the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The facilities being used for elite athletes include our numerous sports halls, studios, 50-metre swimming pool, squash courts and dojo.
Sports facilities at the University of Birmingham are gold medal-winning – whether you are looking to host sports events and competitions, or maybe a conference, dinner or other event with a sporting theme.
The modern Sports & Fitness centre offers a lot of versatility for clients. The 2,000m2 Munrow Arena can be divided into 2 or 3 smaller spaces if needed, or it can host one show court in the centre of the venue. The overall capacity is 1,000, made up of 791 bleacher seats plus viewing balcony. There is also the Slater Hall, a versatile multi-sport option that can act as an exhibition space with a capacity of 250.
The centre also has a gym boasting 200 stations across two floors, plus a 50-metre swimming pool with seating for 200 spectators. There are a number of international standard squash courts, including two courts with moveable walls for doubles matches. Finally, towering above reception is a 10-metre climbing wall, with 30+ routes on it from 3-6c.
There are three meeting rooms within Sport & Fitness: a small meeting room for meetings up to 20; a larger room for 40; and a combined space offering seating for 60 theatre style. Another larger meeting space, the Owsley Room, is located at Bournbrook Pavilion. This is near to the outdoor sports pavilion and pitches, and is a great space for stand-alone or larger sized events. The Owsley Room can seat up to 90 guests.
We have two 3G synthetic pitches designed for contact sport training and two water synthetic pitches located opposite the entrance to the Sport & Fitness club. In addition, there are ten floodlit tennis and netball courts, and a wide range of grass pitches, which are suitable for most outdoor sports. These are all located at our Metchley site, a short walk from campus.
There is also an international training standard athletics track, comprising a 400m, eight-lane floodlit track with a full range of throws and jumps.
Conference and event customers can also book the Raymond Priestley Centre in Coniston, our outdoor education and activities centre. It is perfect for residential trips to the Lake District and offers activities such as canoeing, mountain walking, and problem-solving tasks perfect for team building.
