Birmingham 2022: Venue and Village

As an Official Partner of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the University of Birmingham is playing a key role in delivering an iconic international sporting event that will focus the eyes of the world on our city, our region and our world-leading reputation for excellence. The Games will be taking place across Birmingham and the West Midlands from 28 July – 8 August.


A warm welcome

During the Games, the University will be the Principal Athletes’ Village hosting 3,500 athletes, with the hockey and squash competitions taking place in our world-class sporting facilities.

We are looking forward to the Games highlighting the strong sense of pride that is felt among our students, staff, alumni and wider community as a truly global community with more than 8,000 staff, 38,000 students and over 300,000 alumni from more than 150 countries and all Commonwealth nations and territories. 

We’re proud to welcome international athletes, teams and media and thousands of spectators from across the UK and the Commonwealth at Games time to maximise this once in a generation opportunity.

Squashing the stats

  • 48 sessions of hockey and squash across 11 days
  • 11 days of hockey and squash on campus
  • 492 hockey balls will be ordered for use at the games
  • 696 squash balls will be used for the Games
  • 195,000+ athlete meals will be served on campus
  • 50 technical officials staying on site for hockey, squash and women’s cricket
  • 30 tonnes of ice used for the Games
