As an Official Partner of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the University of Birmingham played a key role in delivering an iconic international sporting event that focused the eyes of the world on our city, region and world-leading reputation for excellence.

A game changing summer

We were proud to host more than 3,500 athletes and officials across our University accommodation as the Principal Athletes’ Village, and be the official competition venues for hockey and squash at our world-class sporting facilities, delivering 48 sessions across the 11 days of the Games.

Birmingham 2022 was a games for everyone, highlighting the strong sense of pride that is felt among our students, staff, alumni and wider community, as a truly global institution with more than 8,000 staff, 38,000 students and over 300,000 alumni from more than 150 countries across all Commonwealth nations and territories.

We were proud to welcome more than 200,000 spectators, international athletes, teams, media and sponsors from across the UK and the Commonwealth at Games time to maximise this once-in-a- generation opportunity.

Squashing the stats

  • 48 sessions of hockey and squash across 11 days
  • 11 days of hockey and squash on campus
  • 492 hockey balls were ordered for the Games
  • 696 squash balls were used at the Games
  • 270,000 athlete meals were served on campus
  • 50 technical officials stayed on site for hockey, squash and women’s cricket
  • 40 tonnes of ice were used at the Games
